Francis G. Grather is the head of the Family Law Section of the firm. A major part of Mr. Grather's practice involves complex matrimonial litigation. He has developed expertise in the division of marital assets with a special emphasis on pensions and other forms of deferred compensation, alimony, support, custody, premarital agreements, custody disputes and adoption proceedings. He was trial attorney in the case of Marx v. Marx, 265 N.J. Super 418 (Ch. Div. 1993), a groundbreaking case in the area of equitable distribution of pensions and also lead trial counsel and appellate counsel in the Estate of Shinn, 394 N.J. Super. 55 (App. Div. 2007), a seminal case involving a prenuptial agreement and the interpretation of the “New Jersey Prenuptial Statute”.
Mr. Grather is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a Charter Member of the New Jersey Chapter of that organization. He has been certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney.
Mr. Grather is a member of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the American Bar Association and participates as a panelist for the Morris County Bar Association Early Settlement Program for matrimonial litigation. He is a past president of the Morris County Bar Association. He has also served on the Editorial Board of the Morris Lawyer, the monthly publication of the Morris County Bar Association.
Mr. Grather also represents clients in chancery and commercial litigation and has extensive experience in litigating complex probate matters.
Mr. Grather has been certified as a mediator in divorce matters by the Rutgers University Conflict Management program, is a member of the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators and is admitted to the New Jersey State Court Roster of Mediators for Economic Aspects of Family Law Cases. He maintains an active association with mental health professionals and family counselors in the field of family law.
Mr. Grather is a graduate of Holy Cross College and received his law degree from Fordham University. He has lived with his wife and family in the Morristown area for over 30 years.
